When I was fourteen years old, in 1970, I was a "Blue Coat" at Sacred Heart Hospital, visiting patients in the Isolation Ward, and attending to children in the Pediatrics Ward. Later that same year I volunteered at St. Joseph's Children's home, mentoring the children and teens. From 1969-1971 I worked at two convalescent centers in Spokane. From 1974 through 1977, I worked at a local hospital as an Attendant in the Emergency Room and Central Service. I received my Masters Degree in Applied Psychology in 1979, and Masters Degree in Social Work in 1985 from Eastern Washington University. From 1977 to 1984, I provided child and family services at the Spokane Community Mental Health Center (SCMHC). During the following year, I was a CHAP (Children's Hospitalization Alternative Program) Case Manager, from 1984-1985. I came by my interest in foster care and adoption honestly. My parents were foster parents. As the oldest of five siblings, we were raised with approximately fifty foster children, up to five at a time, from when I was 8 to 18 years old, in a two-story, three-bedroom, one-bathroom house. Licensing would never approve this now! As a result, I have an extensive and well-rounded expertise with respect to the placement of children in foster care. This early life experience has led me to a clinical emphasis centering on working with children, adolescents and adults who have been affected by early childhood trauma.I left the Community Mental Health Center in 1985, and along with two partners, I founded Spokane Consultants in Family Living and was its Executive Director from 1985 to 1990. This fine agency continues to provide open adoption and attachment evaluations. I was the Clinical Director of Adoptions In Idaho from 1984-1985. I was the Executive Director of Adoptions in Idaho & Montana, from 1985-1986. All during this time, from 1984 on, I also had a private practice with an emphasis upon working with children and their parents who were addressing issues related to foster care, adoption and problems in living associated with abuse and neglect. In my private practice. I continue provide individual, marital, family therapy as well as group counseling. I also provide consultations, training, child and family evaluations, parenting evaluations and home studies. I provide forensic evaluations and expert witness testimony on child welfare issues, including adoption, foster care, and diversity best practices, for private and state agencies in Spokane and throughout the country and Canada. State Contracts I have been contracted, since 1985, with the Washington State Division of Children and Family Services to provide home-based therapy, parenting, attachment and family evaluations. Clinical Supervision I provide clinical supervision addressing the broad range of situations providers face in agency or private practice settings. I have provided consultation as well as pre-and- post-masters supervision, since 1999, for employees at the N.A.T.I.V.E. Project as well as at Spokane Indian Health, in Spokane. I have provided clinical supervision for undergraduate and graduate students since 1987. I currently supervise four masters-level Foster Parent Specialists at the Spokane Foster Parent Support Program. Non-Profit Service Organizations I am the Immediate Past President of the Foster Parents of Washington State (FPAWS) and is also currently the Executive Director of the Spokane Foster Parent Support Program, which is federally funded by a Health and Human Services grant to the Spokane Foster Parent Association. As Executive Director of the Spokane Foster Parent Support Program I am responsible for a budget (of 1.773 million dollars), to be used for improvements in foster care support in Spokane County.I am a Past President of the Washington Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). I am currently a member of its Committee on Inquiry (CO I). And a trainer for Social Workers seeking licensure in Washington State. I have been a member of the Spokane Firestoppers in association with the Spokane Fire Department since 1990. This is a group of professionals experienced in the area of working with firesetting youths and their families. I have provided trainings nationwide in the area of juvenile firesetting, and am a recognized resource for families and providers in this field. I am a member of the NAACP, and a board member of the Northwest Fair Housing Association. I am also a member of the Spokane Community Development Board, and a member of Leadership Spokane. Along a different line, I am a landlord with a ten-year board membership as well as being Vice-President and now Past President of the Inland Empire Rental Association.
